Make a Purchase. Make a Difference!

One World Goods is Rochester’s only fair trade gift shop. We are a volunteer organization celebrating an over 35 year commitment to providing artisans and agricultural producers from around the world a marketplace for their products that honors their skills by paying them a fair wage. We are also committed to telling their stories, supporting women’s right to work, and children’s right to be a child. Our products are made with a commitment to sustainability, equal opportunity, environmental preservation and education.

OUR PRODUCTS

Our products are made by fairly-compensated adult artisans and farmers in over 38 countries. The gift items created range from traditional folk crafts to modern designs. Sustainability is at the heart of our mission. Many items are made from sustainable and recycled materials ranging from wild grasses to oil drums. Using materials like organic cotton, recycled glass, newspapers, and even elephant dung, improve the environment that the artisans call home. The results are products made with love that preserve traditional crafting methods.

ONE WORLD GOODS was born in a laundry basket. In 1987 a small group of church women were moved to aid impoverished artisans living in under-developed countries. They agreed upon a name of One World G.O.O.D.S. (an acronym for Global Opportunities Organized for Dignity and Self-worth). Goods were ordered, priced, and packed in laundry baskets. For several years, the laundry baskets were toted to area churches, schools and social organizations for sales. By 1991 OWG had become so successful that a permanent store was established in the Village Landing Mall in Fairport. In 1994 OWG established itself as an independent 501-C-3, not-for-profit corporation. In early 1997 OWG moved to its current location in Pittsford Plaza, with a complete store renovation in 2007.

OUR HISTORY.

WHAT IS FAIR TRADE?

One World Goods is committed to Fair Trade principals as defined by the World Fair Trade Organization, Fair Trade  Federation, and Fairtrade International. We buy from companies that are certified by one or more of these organizations who have vetting processes ensuring ethical practices and fair compensation for disadvantaged artisans. The principals also include the preservation of cultural identity, environmental sustainability, safe working conditions, no child labor and equal opportunities for women.
